The Altamira National Museum and Research Centre is a state owned museum directly managed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, reporting to the Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Assets, Archives and Libraries, through the Subdirectorate General for State Museums. The museum was created by Order of the Ministry of Culture on 15 June 1979 as a scientific and administrative instrument for the management and conservation of the cave of Altamira.

The new site of the museum was opened on 17 July 2001.

The museums functions are:

  • Conserving, cataloguing, and exhibiting in an orderly manner, the archaeological, prehistoric and historic assets assigned to it, including the management and conservation of the cave of Altamira.
  • Research within its specialisation and related to its heritage.
  • The periodical organisation of exhibitions related to its subject matter.
  • Undertaking communication, educational and outreach activities on its materials and subject matter.
  • Cooperation with other museums and institutions in the same area and covering the same subject matter, both at a national and international level.
